Track and Field

2016 Track & Field fixtures can be found here >>>

The club has always competed in track and field events and, with the 150607-28fantastic facilities which we now have at our disposal at Tavistock College, we are able to prepare our athletes specifically for competition.  We can offer athletes a whole range of opportunities, either :

  • as part of the Tavistock squad who compete in the Devon Open meetings
  • or as a member of a variety of ‘composite’ teams which draw their athletes from clubs in the region.

Competitions and Eligibility

Devon Open Series – This is a series of 4 open meetings held over the summer months.  Anyone from anywhere can compete providing they are 8 years old or older.  However, within the series there is a Devon AA affiliated club competition.  Importantly, this competition is open to athletes in the Under 10 category right through to and including Masters/Vets.  The programme at each meeting does vary but there is still a good selection of events to participate in and this series is certainly a great introduction to athletics.

More information on the Devon Open series can be viewed here >>>.

Devon, Cornwall and South West regional Championships – Each County hosts its own championships, usually in May.  Athletes enter individually and, again, competition is available to athletes across all of the junior and senior age ranges.  Also in the calendar over the summer is the South West Regional Championships which are usually held in Exeter.

South West League – There are 2 divisions to this league made up of clubs from around the south west region.  Tavistock athletes can compete as part of the Armada Team which draws from the clubs affiliated to the Armada Athletics Network (a group made up of clubs in the Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall area).  This is for U13 and above athletes: Masters/Vets compete as Seniors.  There is an element of selection to the Armada Team due to some limitation on numbers in each event.  There are 4 fixtures throughout the season plus a cup match where the teams from both divisions compete together.

Young Athletes and Youth Development Leagues (YAL and YDL) – Both of these are nationally organised leagues broken down into divisions on a regional basis.  Again, the teams in which Tavistock athletes can compete are ‘composite’ and made up of athletes from local clubs.  Athletes are selected to compete for these teams.

Masters / Vets Competition – As well as being able to compete as Masters/Vets in the Devon Open Series, there are a number of other opportunities available.  The South West Veterans Athletics Club organise regional championships each year where athletes compete in each of the 5 year age categories.  There is also a national championships event each year which occupies a full weekend of quality competition.

British Milers Club (BMC) Regional Races – Over the summer months the BMC organise a monthly evening event at Exeter Arena featuring a series of races over 800m, 1500m and, occasionally, 3000m.  These are high standard races for athletes Under 13 and above which are graded by time so that each race comprises athletes who run the event at around the same pace.  Usually led out by a pacemaker, the races attract athletes from all over the region who are chasing PBs and national standards.
